How Stolp works

Stolp acts as a ‘cage of Faraday’, an enclosure to block electromagnetic fields.

The cage, which Stolp is, blocks all signals. This means you won’t have phone reception, wifi or 3G/4G/5G. Nor Bluetooth, RFID, EMR or EMF - might be interesting for your car keys as well. 

All radiation is being blocked. 

You can still use Stolp and receive phonecalls, as Stolp can be used in two modes. 

In the first mode, you're fully disconnected & fully offline. No phonecalls, no Whatsapp notification, nothing comes in nor out. 

In the second mode, you do not fully close Stolp. That way signal comes in and you can receive that important phone call.

Stolp still helps you to disconnect as you're being visually reminded by Stolp to put the phone away from time to time & when it's inside, to not to reach for your phone mindlessly. "Out of sight = out of mind" : there's a bunch of interesting research on how this applies to your smartphone and our focus. 

Similar to when walking in a building without reception or  when being on a plane, your phone will lose connection. When you take your phone out of Stolp again, it takes a couple of milliseconds for your phone to find connection again. Then, all your messages will arrive. 

The person trying to call you will be immediately sent to voicemail. After taking your phone out of Stolp, you'll receive a voicemail message if they left one or a message saying who tried to call you. 

NON-WIRELESS CHARGING: Yes, we provided a small opening for your charging cable. However, you will not be able to fully close Stolp while charging and thus you'll not be able to go 100% offline as you receive phone signal.

Unfortunately being 100% offline and charging with a cable, is physically impossible as the cable creates a hole in the signal-blocking-cage inside Stolp through which the phone signal can enter. 

WIRELESS CHARGING: Yes, when your wireless charger is in Stolp, you can charge your phone while simultaneously being 100% offline. If you prefer to still receive phone calls, you just not close Stolp fully. 

With NFC, you can create automations: if you perform the gesture of holding your phone against the NFC-tag in Stolp, your phone registers the signal and performs a task you've chosen. This way you can stay off your screen while still benefiting from the wide array of features of your smartphone.

Stolp has one built-in NFC tag: inside Stolp for when you put your phone in Stolp. 

Setting up the automation needs to be done beforehand on your phone. It works best with an iPhone Xr 11 or higher, as there's passive NFC and it can be easily done in the Apple App 'Shortcuts'.

On this page you can check if your phone has NFC. Nowadays almost all phones do.

It gets most interesting when your phone has passive NFC such as on iPhone Xr and higher. 

Stolp fits most phones. To give you an idea, the iPhone 12 Max Pro fits in Stolp.

If you want to be sure yours fits, the dimensions of Stolp are 16,7 x 8 cm.

Up to 2-3 phones fit in Stolp Recharge. Bare in mind that wireless technology will only charge the bottom phone. 
Up to 6 regular smartphones fit in Stolp if you take the wireless charger. 

Though this can be less when the phones are thicker-than-usual, or have a cover or cover-wallet wrapped around them.  

Stolp was originally founded by Julien Yee & Matthias Vanhoutteghem with the mission to design iconic products to positively encourage smart phone habits that bring people closer together.

With the mission to have more face-to-face conversations and time well spent in the era of the smartphone, they started out designing for the meeting room with the 'Arena', a product that won both a reddot design award as an IF design award.

In 2020 the world had to rapidly adapt to a new normal, and so did Team Stolp. Our meeting product went in lockdown, forcing us back to the drawing board to keep the company afloat. The result was ‘Stolp’, a product that brought our mission in its purest form. In a year where people spent more time looking at their screen than into each other’s eyes, our story resonated more than ever. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, we quickly sold out our first batch across Europe and beyond. We now continue to grow our brand every day, with new products in the pipeline in addition to the current lineup.

So, we are Stolp. Five letters, straight out of the Dutch dictionary, representing our core product philosophy and celebrating Belgian design.
